What a whirlwind of a December... with a SHEA CHIC Media Blitz!

If you would have told me, the girl who every time I talk in front of an audience pictures myself, screaming a big girly scream then running straight out of the room directly to my car and speeding out of the parking lot, was going to be on two local San Diego T.V. Stations within one week, I would have laughed and said you're funny....but I like the way you think!

By the grace of God,  I was asked to showcase my SHEA CHIC products in the studio (seriously) and have a SHEA CHIC segment on SanDiego6 the CW and San Diego's CBS station.  I've got to tell you that overcoming the fight or flight syndrome, has been quite a challenge, but just the fact that I didn't pass out or run directly out of the studio deserves a serious spa day. :)

Here is the First Segment at The CW SanDiego6

Here is the Second Segment on CBS Channel 8

If you would like to see the "behind the scenes" of both studio's, I have all of the pictures on my SHEA CHIC Facebook Page.

SHEA CHIC at the 2011 American Music Awards Talent Suite!

These are some of the Celebrities autographs that we were able to get at the American Music Awards Talent Suite in Hollywood California! That's how many Celebrities, Professional Athletes, Reality Stars, and Disney Stars we met.  We actually had to turn the page over and have them sign on the back, because we ran out of room!
What an incredible experience this was!
The American Music Awards Talent Suite was held at the Ben Kitay Studios in Hollywood, California. Set-up began at 7:30 A.M. and the talent was to arrive at 10:00 A.M. sharp. They weren't kidding either - from 9:50 A.M. we were talking and moving 100 miles an hour. I couldn't stop for a snack if I wanted to.  We ran at this pace until 4:00 P.M..

The entire show was very well organized and ran like a well oiled machine.  The emcee would announce over the microphone each celebrities name and the highlights of their career. After a round of applause from everyone in the room, the celebrity would then make their entrance. After their exciting entrance the celebrity was then greeted by their own event guide that would accompany them throughout the entire event. These event guides acted as tour guides to the celebrity and would introduce the celebrity to us as they approached our tables.

It was a very interesting group of Actors, Athletes, and Reality Stars. The one thing that I will never forget is how incredibly nice each of the celebrities were. I don't mean just nice, I mean incredibly nice and genuinely interested in my Shea Butter SHEA CHIC products.

Also, It was interesting and refreshing to see how many mother's were accompanying the celebrities.  There were a lot of Disney Actors that attended this event, so it would make sense that the Mom's accompanied them, but a lot of Mom's none the less. There were some dad's, too. I just thought it was interesting how many parents were such a big part of their lives. Some of the celebrities brought friends, but mostly parents.

I took interest in this because my mom, Bobbie Rohn, was with me. My mom always attends my shows and helps me. There is no way I could ever do these by myself. There's just too much for one person to do, plus she's just fun to be around and people always like my mom.

Mom and I had planned on taking our own pictures, but when the opportunity came to hire a professional (Brian Saenz), I jumped on it.  This was possibly the best decision I made for the entire show. After looking at our own pictures and then at a few of his, wow what a difference!

After I told each celebrity about my SHEA CHIC products, I would then take a picture with them and then my mom would approach them to get their autograph.  Mom, Brian and I were a little team and it felt so nice to have team SHEA CHIC.

The entire event lasted until 4:30 P.M. After the event, mom and I drove back home to San Diego and even though we were tired, we were so excited about what we had just experienced. This experience was more than I had ever imagined and I feel so blessed. They loved my SHEA CHIC products and am so excited about the future of my little business. ~April

SHEA CHIC...WORKING from HOME!

My SHEA CHIC "Summer Office." Sitting with me is Tai Tai.
Now, did you really think that I could accomplish anything
outside without one of our pets helping?
Working from home has been a wonderful, yet challenging experience.  While, it's nice having a very short commute and even shorter morning routine, it's become much more challenging in other ways that I didn't expect.  I've had to become more aware of my time management and stop spending so much time with my four dogs and three parrots in the morning. I've also found that socialization outside of my home has actually become a goal on my weekly "to do" list. Really? Socializing now needs a check mark beside it? The things I've discovered about myself is that I really enjoy being alone with my thoughts.  I truly relish going down to my SHEA CHIC Shop and immersing myself in a new creation or even creating an existing product.  There's something nice about following a recipe and knowing exactly how it's going to turn out.  There's a comfort in knowing that I've done this before and the outcome is going to be just as wonderful as it was many times before. Now, that it's summer I have added a "new" office... my backyard.  This is where I start my day, collect my thoughts and drink my morning coffee. I now have a strict daily planning procedure through DAYLITE on my Mac.  The night before I plan out my day and each morning at my new Summer office, I do my fb, twitter, and blogging.  Right now, I'm sitting here listening to our beautiful chime, while watching the palms slowly blow in the wind. If I'm not careful, before I know it I've lost a half hour and then there goes my schedule. I've got so many things that I want to do with SHEA CHIC and if I'm not careful, I can be overwhelmed and running in circles, while not really accomplishing anything.  So, if you're thinking about working from home, I strongly suggest that you put a strict plan in place and work seriously on your time management skills.  Remember you can be the boss you've always wanted, but never had.  You've just been promoted, now take charge and have a plan. You can do this! ~April

HANDMADE gifts are the most THOUGHTFUL!

The thoughtfulness behind handmade gifts...
Before I had officially opened SHEA CHIC, I had given my first business card to a very close friend of mine, Diane. Without knowing, Diane sent my business card to her sister and had her create this beautiful apron for me.  She perfectly matched the pink, along with the black and white damask that you've seen on my business cards and company logo. This act of kindness completely overwhelmed me.  I didn't know what to say? It was simply amazing! The fact that she had put forth so much effort and actually had this apron created just for me was one of the most wonderful gifts I had ever received.  The thoughtfulness it took to buy something handmade, and not mass produced in a store somewhere took a significant amount of planning and patience on her part. What a wonderful and thoughtful gift to receive! Thank you, Diane!

Then about a month ago I received a brown envelope in the mail.  When I opened it, I found a beautiful handmade SHEA CHIC book.  This book had my signature SHEA CHIC damask gift wrapping along with my SHEA CHIC sticker. Wow! Then when I opened the book, I discovered a handwritten message (yes..."handwritten") note along with pages and pages of SHEA CHIC moments in time. From our very first orders, to our very first wholesale account, to our very first charity fundraiser.

Again, I was in shock. Tina had taken the time to carefully create this entire book.  From carefully choosing each image, to hand cutting each picture and background,  along with taking the time to write a personal handwritten note.  All of this love and attention was all done by hand, not by a machine mass producing it, but by someone who carefully and lovingly created this for me.  So, if you're ever wondering if giving something handmade means anything more... the answer is YES!  Thank you Diane and Tina for giving me these handmade gifts. I don't think you'll ever completely know how much they mean to me, and to everyone else, please continue to support the handmade community.

How this relates to SHEA CHIC... I'm always striving to provide better Customer Service. I want you to immediately think of SHEA CHIC when you want something special for yourself or for someone you care about.  You and the people in your life, deserve the very best.  That means the best ingredients, best customer service, and the best in affordable shipping. I've also begun providing at no charge, Personalized Handwritten Messages. This way, I can do all of the work for you.  Just let me know what you would like the message to say and I will handwrite your personal message for you, include it in their package, then ship their SHEA CHIC directly to them.  If you have any suggestions in how I can make your SHEA CHIC experience better, please feel free to contact me at APRIL@SHEACHIC.com~April

I've LEARNED that GROWING my GARDEN is much like GROWING my BUSINESS!

While working in my shop I've fallen madly in love with Lavender, Gardenia and Plumeria, so much that I wanted to plant them in my home garden. I never thought that florals were for me, but boy was I wrong. Here we've planted two different types of Lavender plants outside our dining room, along with some gorgeous pink Hydrangea's.

In our back yard are the alluringly intoxicating Gardenia's. Everytime I walk by those gorgeous flowers, I can't help but stop what I'm doing, learn over and slowly take-in their soft femine fragrance.  Unfortunately, these flowers don't last as long as I would like, so I take every opportunity I can to enjoy them while they're here.

Then there's the lush tropical fragrance of the exotic Plumeria flower. We found this large Plumeria plant at Costco for thirty dollars.  I can't wait to see the first flowers from this Plant. Now, I've just got to decide where to plant her.
While gardening, I've been thinking a lot about the close association that gardening has with growing my business.  These plants (like my business) have the potential to grow, but not without constant maintenance.  I can't just simply plant them and hope that they grow. Planting them is just the first step, of many. I must constantly nurture and monitor how they're doing. Are they growing? Do I need to change some things? Is what I'm doing working? If so, how long do I keep doing it? I couldn't help but think how beautiful SHEA CHIC has grown in the last year.  It's bloomed, and grown into one of the most gorgeous flowers of my life. I look forward to seeing how SHEA CHIC will grow and change through out this next year. All I know is that I'm thankful for the gardens in my life, they've made my life much more beautiful. ~April

Almost ONE year in business... it's time for a BUSINESS PLAN update!

Some of the AMAZING San Diego SCORE Counselors.

I attended another amazingly informative SCORE Business Workshop.  This past week I attended a six hour workshop, and it was packed... with people and information! I left armed with everything that I needed to revise, enhance, and update my current SHEA CHIC Business Plan.  Wow! My head was spinning... by hour two! I was worried I wouldn't absorb everything, but luckily we were each given a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (on disc) to easily imput our own company information for income, cash flow, and balancing figures. What I enjoyed most about the event were the Counselors.  Each Counselor, had years of experience in their own industry.  Whether it was Marketing or Finance they had a plethora of knowledge and endless ideas on how I could grow my business. There are no "nay-sayers," just fun, encouraging, and knowledgable Counselors. Also, we didn't need to bring anything to this workshop.  They provided the printed version of their Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation, so we could follow along and take notes as we needed and... lunch was provided! SCORE literally...(dork I know!)

SCORE San Diego Business Plan Workshop.
I think I could take this course three more times and still learn something from it.  It's a lot of information, and a great workshop for anyone interested in starting their own business. Now, I've got tons of work ahead, but now I've got the tools to do it! Great Job SCORE of San Diego! ~April

Shopping in the SHEA CHIC Shop (...say that 4 times!)

Deirdre, Diane and I in the SHEA CHIC Shop.
Only on special occasions, do I open up my SHEA CHIC shop for a little V.I.P. shopping experience. Today was one of those days.  My good friend Diane and my new sweet and vibrant friend, Deirdre (in from Chicago) were ready for a little V.I.P. treatment. We had fun smelling and comparing our favorite fragrances and I even shared some secrets about the Spring SHEA CHIC line coming out soon.  In the future, I would love to have champagne and make a little happy hour out of it.  Oh the fun we would have.  Thank you Diane and Deirdre for a great afternoon! xo ~April
